Prompting AI -

For Video Producers & Editors

Hey Reader I've got a question for you,

Ever feel like you're only scratching the surface with AI? You’ve probably played around with ChatGPT or similar tools, maybe even used some AI features in your software. But getting truly useful results quickly often feels like... well, a frustrating time-sink, right?

Learning the Correct Skill

I know I initially spent way too much time trying to fix AI outputs that were supposed to save me time. What really shifted things for me was focusing on one key skill: prompt engineering.

This is the practical skill of clearly communicating what we need from AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and others.

Getting better at prompting means:

  • Less Frustration & Wasted Time: Stop wrestling with vague outputs.
  • Genuinely Useful Results: Get AI to deliver content tailored to your specific needs.
  • Unlock AI as a Real Partner: Turn it into a helpful collaborator for creative and productive tasks.

Essentially, it comes down to structuring your requests effectively – giving the AI clear Context, defining the specific Task, and detailing the desired Output. Tiny shifts in how you ask can make a massive difference.

How I Use AI:

Client Approval Spreadsheets

  • I needed approval on the fonts, colors, logos, and backgrounds for 3 different video types.
    • "Use the information below (provided below) to create an easy to use spreadsheet for my client to approve their branding assets for the 3 video types. create a status column for each branding element."
  • In Gemini I exported to Google Sheets and quickly formatted the spreadsheet before emailing it out - and now I use it as a template.

Generating New Ideas for Broll

  • "You are a commercial director working with creative agencies. Analyze the transcript below to create a 2 column shot list. In the first column, reference the transcript and in the second column describe fitting broll that keeps the audience engaged while adding a deeper understanding to the story"
    • You might want to limit the response at first:
      • "List out the 5 most important visuals I need based on the transcript"

More Examples and Prompts

I've put together a full, detailed breakdown on the blog 🔗

It covers the 3 essential elements of crafting high-impact prompts and includes practical examples you can adapt today for tasks like analyzing transcripts, drafting client docs, or even generating call sheets.

This is the stuff that helps you move beyond basic requests and really leverage AI's power.

Hope this helps you unlock more AI potential!

Cheers!

Rob Ruscher September 9th 2025 A Data-Driven Approach to Outperform the 'Simulating Space' Trailer ↓ Have you ever looked at a "good" result and felt it should have been great? Perhaps you made a great video that didn't get the reach you were hoping for. That was my experience with the original trailer for our ‘Simulating Space’ documentary. A 4.6% click-through rate and 5.6k views in six months are respectable for a B2B marketing video. It’s good, but not good enough. The data told a deeper...

Rob Ruscher September 9th 2025 Beyond the Teleprompter: Finding the Human Story in B2B Tech ↓ We've all seen them: customer testimonials that check every box. They list the right features, mention ROI, and follow the script perfectly. They’re professional, polished, and completely forgettable. Why? Because in our rush to capture messaging points, we often script the humanity right out of the story. I’ve learned that being curious is a valuable asset as a filmmaker. It’s the key to moving...

Simulating Space, the Trailer 🎬 April 11, 2025 Quick shift from the usual workflow tips today – wanted to share a project I recently worked on that tackled a fascinating creative puzzle: visualizing the future of space simulation. Ever wrestle with making something highly technical or abstract visually compelling? We all know the challenge – turning complex data or engineering concepts into something that grabs attention and tells a story effectively. I wanted to share a project I worked on...
