Beyond the Teleprompter: Finding the Human Story in B2B Tech

We've all seen them: customer testimonials that check every box. They list the right features, mention ROI, and follow the script perfectly. They’re professional, polished, and completely forgettable.

Why? Because in our rush to capture messaging points, we often script the humanity right out of the story.

I’ve learned that being curious is a valuable asset as a filmmaker. It’s the key to moving beyond a dull testimonial and creating an inspiring customer story that builds the brand and drives demand.

A Story from the Field: The 'Simulating Space' Project

This lesson hit home for me while filming our award-winning "Simulating Space" short documentary. We were interviewing brilliant engineers—experts in their field, but not people who typically spend time in a "hot seat" surrounded by cameras and bright lights.

On paper, the first part of the interview was a success. The answers were technically accurate and hit all our key messages. But they lacked the passion needed to connect with the audience. The story was missing.

That's when I realized we were getting all the "what," but none of the "why." So, when the cameras started rolling again, I set the script aside and asked what I was most curious about:

The shift was immediate.

Suddenly, we weren't talking about software features. We were hearing a heartfelt story about watching Star Trek with a beloved grandfather. There was a moment of reflection, his eyes lit up, and we began to find our story. That single moment of human connection became the anchor for the entire film, helping it win at the Cannes International Independent Film Festival.

The Shift: From Interrogation to Conversation

That experience solidified a core principle for me: the goal is a conversation, not an interrogation.

This approach doesn't mean abandoning key business metrics. It actually makes them more powerful. Once you build trust and comfort, you can circle back to those important questions about ROI and efficiency. But now, the answers are grounded in genuine experience that will stick with our audience.

But Does It Work? (A Look at the Data)

This is more than a creative philosophy; it’s a strategic advantage that delivers measurable results.

When I took the initiative to analyze our team's YouTube analytics and report my findings to my manager, the data was undeniable.

Across every metric—views, engagement, and audience retention—our customer stories built on this human-centric model were the single best-performing pieces of content.

By turning a standard testimonial into a compelling story, we don't just create a better video. We also:

  • Build authentic social proof and trust at scale.
  • Deepen our relationships with key customers through collaboration.
  • Create powerful assets that empower our sales teams and build our brand.

Ultimately, the most powerful marketing doesn't feel like marketing at all. It feels like a true story, well told. Dive deeper into the story and learn more about the campaign here.

What are your go-to methods for uncovering authentic stories in your marketing? I'd love to connect and hear about them. Let's continue the conversation in this thread.

Simulating Space, the Trailer 🎬 April 11, 2025 Quick shift from the usual workflow tips today – wanted to share a project I recently worked on that tackled a fascinating creative puzzle: visualizing the future of space simulation. Ever wrestle with making something highly technical or abstract visually compelling? We all know the challenge – turning complex data or engineering concepts into something that grabs attention and tells a story effectively. I wanted to share a project I worked on...

I recently had the chance to work on a project in one of my favorite places in the world—Zion National Park. If you’ve never been, imagine towering red rocks glowing under the sun, shifting colors from vibrant orange to deep purples as the day moves on. It’s a cinematographer’s dream, but, as with any shoot, there’s always more going on behind the scenes than you might expect. Here’s how this latest adventure played out and what I learned along the way. The Project I was hired as the...
